The basis of science is the hypothetico-deductive method and the recording of experiments in sufficient detail to enable reproducibility. We report the development of Robot Scientist "Adam," which advances the automation of both. Adam has autonomously generated functional genomics hypotheses about the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and experimentally tested these hypotheses by using laboratory automation. We have confirmed Adam's conclusions through manual experiments. To describe Adam's research, we have developed an ontology and logical language. The resulting formalization involves over 10,000 different (...)

Turning back the hands of time: Autobiographical memories in dementia cued by a museum setting.Amanda N. Miles, Lise Fischer-Mogensen, Nadia H. Nielsen, Stine Hermansen & Dorthe Berntsen - 2013 - Consciousness and Cognition 22 (3):1074-1081.
The current study examined the effects of cuing autobiographical memory retrieval in 12 older participants with dementia through immersion into a historically authentic environment that recreated the material and cultural context of the participants’ youth. Participants conversed in either an everyday setting or a museum setting furnished in early twentieth century style while being presented with condition matched cues. Conversations were coded for memory content based on an adapted version of Levine, Svoboda, Hay, Winocur, and Moscovitch coding scheme. More autobiographical (...)

Desire, Familiarity, and Engagement in Polyamory: Results From a National Sample of Single Adults in the United States.Amy C. Moors, Amanda N. Gesselman & Justin R. Garcia - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Coupledom and notions of intimacy and family formation with one committed partner are hallmarks of family and relationship science. Recent national surveys in the United States and Canada have found that consensually non-monogamous relationships are common, though prevalence of specific types of consensual non-monogamy are unknown. The present research draws on a United States Census based quota sample of single adults to estimate the prevalence of desire for, familiarity with, and engagement in polyamory—a distinct type of consensually non-monogamous relationship where (...)

Examining the Impact of Dons Providing Peer Instruction for Academic Integrity: Dons' and Students' Perspectives. [REVIEW]Lucia Zivcakova, Eileen Wood, Gail Forsyth, Navinder Dhillon, Danielle Ball, Brittany Corolis, Amanda Coulas, Stephen Daniels, Joshua Hill, Anja Krstic, Amy Linseman & Marjan Petkovski - 2012 - Journal of Academic Ethics 10 (2):137-150.
A peer instruction model was used whereby 78 residence dons (36 males, 42 females) provided instruction regarding academic integrity for 324 students (125 males, 196 females) under their supervision. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to assess survey responses from both the dons and students regarding presentation content, quality, and learning. Overall, dons consistently identified information-based slides about academic integrity as the most important material for the presentations, indicating that fundamental information was needed. Although student ratings of the usefulness of (...)

Pragmatic Idealism and Scientific Prediction: A Philosophical System and Its Approach to Prediction in Science.Amanda Guillán - 2017 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
This monograph analyzes Nicholas Rescher's system of pragmatic idealism. It also looks at his approach to prediction in science. Coverage highlights a prominent contribution to a central topic in the philosophy and methodology of science. The author offers a full characterization of Rescher's system of philosophy. She presents readers with a comprehensive philosophico-methodological analysis of this important work. Her research takes into account different thematic realms: semantic, logical, epistemological, methodological, ontological, axiological, and ethical. The book features three, thematic-parts: I) General (...)

A critical survey of various positions on the nature, use, possession, and analysis of normative concepts. We frame our treatment around G.E. Moore’s Open Question Argument, and the ways metaethicists have responded by departing from a Classical Theory of concepts. In addition to the Classical Theory, we discuss synthetic naturalism, noncognitivism (expressivist and inferentialist), prototype theory, network theory, and empirical linguistic approaches. Although written for a general philosophical audience, we attempt to provide a new perspective and highlight some underappreciated problems (...)

    What Christians Believe about Forgiveness.Stephen N. Williams - 2011 - Studies in Christian Ethics 24 (2):147-156.
This essay constitutes a brief survey of what Christians believe about forgiveness. After describing what is stake and noting the connection between forgiveness and amendment of life, it considers two questions in particular. Firstly, is forgiveness conditional on repentance? Secondly, is forgiveness compatible with resentment? It concludes by giving priority to the question of truth when we consider the appropriateness of forgiveness.

International Humanitarian Law mandates that all wounded in war, no matter which party they belong to, shall receive aid in accordance with their medical condition, and that “there shall be no distinction among them founded on any grounds other than medical ones.” This principle of impartiality is endorsed by various other military and civilian institutions worldwide to include the ICRC, the US Department of Defense, and the American Medical Association. In this essay, I argue that in some cases, we ought, (...)

The role of elaboration in the persistence of awareness for degraded objects.Stephen M. Emrich, Justin D. N. Ruppel & Susanne Ferber - 2008 - Consciousness and Cognition 17 (1):319-329.
When a fragmented line-drawing of an object moves relative to a background of randomly oriented lines, the previously hidden object can be segregated from the background and consequently enters awareness. In this shape-from-motion paradigm, the percept of the object briefly persists after the motion stops, demonstrating the maintenance of a bound percept in awareness. This study investigated how the manipulation of object features that are crucial to recognition influences both the binding process and the maintenance of objects in awareness. Overall, (...)

Ethical Attitudes of Accounting Practitioners: Are Rank and Ethical Attitudes Related?Stephen J. Conroy, Tisha L. N. Emerson & Frank Pons - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 91 (2):183-194.
We address a previous finding in the business ethics literature in which accounting professionals in higher rank levels, i.e., “manager” or “partner” of auditing firms, appear to have lower moral reasoning ability than their junior counterparts. Prior investigations have relied upon a similar methodology for estimating ethical beliefs, namely testing “moral reasoning ability” using either the Moral Judgment Interview or Defining Issues Test. In the present study, we use a multiple vignettes approach to test for the existence of the inverse (...)

    A Reply to Marilyn Piety’s Review of Kierkegaard’s Dialectic of Inwardness.Stephen N. Dunning - 1990 - The Owl of Minerva 22 (1):119-122.
It is an irony that Kierkegaard would have relished that Marilyn Piety’s review in The Owl, 21, 2 : 205–208, of my book, Kierkegaard’s Dialectic of Inwardness, was published in a journal dedicated to Hegel studies and read by Hegel scholars. For her criticisms are typical of those for whom Kierkegaard is the David who slew forever the Goliath of Hegelianism. Thus it is not really, as she states, a lack of “substance” that disturbs her about my book; it is (...)

  34. Business ethics and religion: Religiosity as a predictor of ethical awareness among students. [REVIEW]Stephen J. Conroy & Tisha L. N. Emerson - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 50 (4):383-396.
We survey students at two Southern United States universities (one public and one private, religiously affiliated). Using a survey instrument that includes 25 vignettes, we test two important hypotheses: whether ethical attitudes are affected by religiosity (H1) and whether ethical attitudes are affected by courses in ethics, religion or theology (H2). Using a definition of religiosity based on behavior (church attendance), our results indicate that religiosity is a statistically significant predictor of responses in a number of ethical scenarios. In seven (...)

Interpretation pervades human thinking. Whether perception or experience, spoken word or written theory, whatever enters our consciousness must be interpreted in order to be understood. Every area of inquiry—art and literature, philosophy and religion, history and the social sciences, even many aspects of the natural sciences—involves countless opportunities to interpret the object of inquiry according to very different paradigms. These paradigms may derive from the language we speak, the nature of our education, or personal preferences. The abundance and diversity of (...)
